Lori
Nelson Sumrall has drawn horses since she was a young girl, always inspired by
the horses she rode as a child and the horses famous on the racetrack at the
time. She was born in the year of the fiery horse, determined enough to ride
that without any help from her parents or older brothers she would catch her
Paint mare from a large pasture and heave her big western saddle upon her back
to go off and ride the local roads and pastures of Sandy, Utah.
Many
of Lori’s paintings are based on photos she takes herself. She paints equine
commissions in acrylic or oil, taking great pride in producing an either
realistic or expressionistic interpretation of her photos. She also produces
expressionistic paintings using a process she developed herself that includes a
great deal of texture, layering, and painting of negative spaces. Lori also
enjoys creating paintings for children’s rooms, using beautful color
combinations with either animals or sea creatures as her subjects. Lori will
produce a painting for you using your color scheme, whether for your room or
your child’s. She will also take photos of your beloved horse for commission
work.
Lori resides in Decatur, Georgia, with her two children. She is an avid
equestrian and artist, competing in Endurance events since 1993. She regularly
devotes time to volunteer activities for the endurance riding community. She has
for many years worked alongside her longtime equestrian friends clearing and
improving horse riding trails in the Southeast. She worked for eight years as a
court reporter, majored in biology in college, and attended Veterinary Medical
School at The University of Georgia. Lori gave up her veterinary education to
focus on raising her children when her second child came along. Other than
giving back to her community, Lori’s life is greatly enriched by the love of her
family, by creating works of art, by the relationships she develops with the
horses she rides, and by the friendships she treasures. Everyday she strives to
accomplish something creative, something constructive, and something
compassionate.
